Stefano Scarampella was a late 19th, early 20th century maker from Mantua. The Tarisio auction house deemed this instrument "school of" Scarampella, which tells us it is not an original as labeled, but shows Scarampella's influence and possible tutelage. They suggested a higher reserve starting price for their New York auction, so we consider this to be a very competitive offering.
This particular instrument was purchased from an estate after the owner passed away, and all of what was paid for it went to her long-time caregiver. The instrument needed new setup work, but no major repairs, and it is in excellent condition.
The instrument came to us with authentication papers writtten by the well-respected Liandro Bisiach shop, but it became clear that the papers were clearly for a different instrument. Speculation is that foul play probably occured, meaning a swapping of instruments by an unscrupulous shop, and an unsuspecting owner. An authenticated original in good condition will sell in excess of $100,000.
As with all of our violins, this one is set up to professional standards with a hand-fitted sound post, bridge, nut, fingerboard, pegs, tailpiece, and professional strings. Once strung up, our fine adjustments optimize the harmonic system to produce the warmth and power that our instruments are known for. When it feels right, it also sounds right.
The violin has a bold, clear tone, and is very responsive.
We have matched the violin with a Pernambuco bow from Arcos Brasil that is one of their elegant Replica series bows, made by their very best makers with premium hand-selected wood. In our opionion these professional bows compare favorably to bows costing twice as much, and therefore are an outstanding value.
Complimentary Andrea rosin is included with all of our bows.
Player Level: Advanced/Professional.
Pegs: Ebony. If you would like Perfection pegs installed, there is no charge; just let us know.
Case: Bobelock 1047 Fiberglass Half Moon Suspension Case with smokey red interior.
We can accomodate preferences. Please call with questions about instruments, bows, pegs, cases, strings, tailpieces, or anything else.
